My research interests
As my bibliography shows, my research interests
have, for many years now, fallen into two main areas: pre-clinical and clinical, in a continuum of translational research.
It is certainly my view that in the field of molecular imaging pre-clinical
research is crucial to the success of subsequent clinical research, and that
initial answers to many
questions that arise in clinical practice can be found in pre-clinical research.

Pre-clinical research
In the pre-clinical sphere, I have conducted research into methodological aspects of molecular imaging, cell and animal models,
and the application of experimental techniques in the areas of physiology, pathology and experimental pharmacology. Over the years,
I have investigated how varying concentrations of substrates and hormonescan affect the brain’s uptake of glucose, and the ways
in which drugs affect brain metabolism; I have also been involved in the characterisation of tracers for cerebral perfusion imaging.
More recently I have begun to focus on imaging in oncology and on the imaging of cell-mediated therapy.

Preclinical research:
Clinical research
My main areas of interest in the clinical research field, both in the past and now, are cardiovascular and heart disease, and
neurological diseases. I have previously conducted PET studies in patients affected by epilepsy, fatal insomnia, Lupus, coma,
neurofibromatosis, Prader-Willy syndrome, thyroid disorders, ocular disorders and brain tumours, and also in kidney and pancreas
transplanted diabetic patients. More recently I have begun to focus more on the study of patients with movement disorders,
dementia and HIV infection. My ongoing clinical research activity is described in more detail in a special page of this website:
